VIVAnews - James Auger and Chris Melhuish design students, researchers from Birstol Robotics Laboratory, the British succeeded in making a wall clock, lights, and robots that are different from robots in general.

Do not use electricity, batteries or solar power, the devices have gotten energy from insects, particularly flies.

Auger said he got the thought while observing how plants are ready to get the energy and survive by eating insects that perch. Here's the video: Eater Insect Clocks.

Using a technology known as a microbial fuel cell, researchers use bacteria and food (dead insects are captured).

After the bacteria consume the food, the researchers took the electron that's in these bacteria and become electric. Electricity is that the primary supply of energy for the robot, clock, or the lamp in question.

As an illustration, eight carrion flies could supply electricity to control for 12 days.

NASA Satellites approach the comet Tempel

VIVAnews - Mission-Next NASA's Stardust comet Tempel 1 and meet each other in space, right on Valentine's Day, 14 February.Although not intersect, a meeting between them will be very close.

Stardust-Next meeting with Tempel 1 was a meeting of the second spacecraft to the comet on July 4, 2005 after then. At that time, the aircraft from NASA's Deep Impact managed a sensor toward Tempel 1 while watching him when passing.

"We have received the first pictures around the comet Tempel 1," said Veverka. "Meeting spacecraft with celestial bodies are so small and quick like a comet in space is a vast challenge, but we are glad all are well prepared," he said.

Comet Tempel 1 comet itself is measuring 7.6 x 4.9 kilometers. He orbits the Sun with a period of 5.52 years. Called Tempel 1 because it was first discovered by Wilhelm Tempel, an astronomer who worked in France on April 3, 1867.

VIVAnews - Dari penelitian terbaru terhadap fosil ular yang diperkirakan telah berusia 95 juta tahun, terungkap bahwa ada dua tulang kaki kecil yang tersambung ke tulang pinggul hewan tersebut.

Seperti dikutip dari LiveScience, 10 Februari 2011, fosil yang ditemukan di Libanon tersebut berasal dari zaman di mana ular belum kehilangan tungkai belakang mereka.

Rekonstruksi tiga dimensi terhadap tulang tersebut akan segera dilakukan untuk membantu para peneliti memahami bagaimana ular berevolusi hingga kehilangan kakinya itu.

Adapun perdebatan yang menghangat di kalangan paleontologist adalah apakah nenek moyang ular berkaki itu merupakan kadal yang berenang di air atau kadal yang melata di darat.

“Sebuah tulang kaki berukuran panjang satu inci (sekitar 2,5 centimeter) terlihat pada fosil ular Libanon. Sayangnya, separuh bagian panggul ular itu terkubur di dalam batu,” kata Alexandra Houssaye, peneliti dari Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, Perancis.

Ular yang panjangnya 19 inci (sekitar 50 centimeter) ini merupakan Eupodophis descouensi, yang merupakan satu dari tiga fosil ular yang pernah ditemukan memiliki kaki. “Membongkar batu untuk menemukan satu kaki lagi tidaklah dimungkinkan,” ucapnya.

Untuk itu, peneliti akan menggunakan teknik yang disebut sebagai synchrotron-radiation computed laminography (SRCL). Serupa dengan pemindaian medis CT scan, SRCL menggunakan sinar X untuk menggambarkan struktur internal dari sebuah objek, namun dengan resolusi 1.000 kali lebih tinggi.

Dari pemindaian, terlihat kaki yang tersembunyi di dalam batu itu bertekuk di bagian lutut. Akan tetapi, kaki itu tidak memiliki telapak dan tulang jari.

“Struktur tulang kaki yang tersimpan rapi di dalam batu ini serupa dengan struktur tulang milik kadal darat,” kata Houssaye. “Meski demikian, satu penelitian saja tidak akan bisa memastikan apakah ular ini punya nenek moyang hewan air atau hewan darat,” ucapnya.

Meski demikian, Houssaye menyebutkan, anatomi tulang milik ular itu menunjukkan bahwa evolusi telah menghilangkan kaki milik ular bukan dengan mengubah cara tulang itu tumbuh. “Kemungkinan, kaki itu tumbuh melambat atau semakin pendek,” ucapnya.

Eksperimen tersebut, menurut Houssaye, merupakan eksperimen pertama yang menggunakan teknik SRCL di dunia paleontology, dan masih banyak yang perlu dianalisa. “Langkah selanjutnya adalah menganalisa fosil tulang belakang ular lainnya, mengamati tungkai ular dan kadal hidup dan menganalisa fosil ular tertua yang pernah ditemukan,” ucapnya.

Microsoft: Komputer Bervirus Dilarang Browsing

Komputer yang tak terlindungi membahayakan keselamatan komputer lain dalam lingkungannya.

VIVAnews - Menurut Scott Charney, seorang peneliti keamanan Microsoft, komputer yang mengandung virus seharusnya diblokir dari internet dan masuk ke karantina sampai mereka mendapatkan sertifikat ‘sehat’.

Dalam proposal yang diajukan oleh tim komputasi Microsoft, koneksi pengguna yang komputernya mengandung virus harus dibatasi untuk mencegah virus menyebar ke komputer lainnya.

“Sama seperti orang yang tidak mendapatkan vaksinasi. Ia membahayakan kesehatan orang lain,” kata Scott Charney, Corporate Vice President Computing Team Microsoft, seperti dikutip dari Sydney Morning Herald, 11 Oktober 2010.

Komputer yang tak terlindungi atau terkena virus membahayakan komputer lain dalam lingkungan komputer tersebut. “Intinya, kita perlu meningkatkan dan menjaga kesehatan perangkat milik konsumen yang terhubung ke internet untuk mencegah risiko yang lebih besar,” ucap Charney.

Charney menyebutkan, komputer harus memiliki sertifikat ‘bersih dan sehat’ sebelum diperkenankan terhubung ke internet. Jika perbaikan untuk komputer yang terkena virus sudah tersedia, komputer yang terkena virus akan dikabari untuk diminta mendownload solusi atau meng-update antivirus mereka.

Untuk itu, dalam proposal yang diajukan, Chavney menyebutkan bahwa setiap PC harus punya fungsi darurat di mana pengguna tetap bisa melakukan aktivitas tertentu. “Sama seperti layanan darurat untuk ponsel,” ucapnya.

Sebelum ini, sejumlah penyedia layanan internet di Amerika Serikat dan Eropa sudah berkali-kali mempertimbangkan untuk memblokir komputer bervirus dari internet. Akan tetapi langkah ini belum juga dilakukan karena sangat mahal dan hanya memberikan sedikit keuntungan bagi mereka.

Svechinskaya menjadi otak pencurian uang senilai US$35 juta dari rekening bank di Amerika

VIVAnews -- Siapa yang mengira dibalik kecantikan dan otak encernya, Kristina Svechinskaya menjadi dalang pencurian uang senilai US$35 juta dari rekening bank di Amerika Serikat. Modusnya, dengan menggunakan virus komputer.

Berkat kelakuannya, ia mendapat predikat 'hacker paling seksi sedunia'. Ia bahkan disejajarkan dengan mata-mata cantik, Anna Chapman, yang sempat mengebohkan dunia. Apalagi, dua wanita menarik ini sama-sama berasal dari Rusia.

Dalam menjalankan aksinya, Svechinskaya bekerja bersama 37 hacker lainnya.

Gadis berusia 21 tahun itu saat ini ditahan di New York. Svechinskaya memanfaatkan virus 'Zeus Trojan' dan malware lainnya untuk membajak komputer orang lain.

Lalu, secara rahasia, para hacker komplotannya memantau aktivitas komputer korban, mencuri nomor rekening bank dan password. Dengan modal itu, mereka lalu mengambil uang jutaan dolar dari rekening korban.

Seperti dimuat situs Daily Mail, Rabu 13 Oktober 2010, uang hasil curian itu lalu ditransfer ke ratusan rekening bank palsu milik perantara di Amerika Serikat yang menerima dan mencuci uang hasil kejahatan cyber.

Svechinskaya juga berperan sebagai perantara yang mendapatkan komisi 10 persen dari uang curian yang ditransfer oleh hacker lainnya.

Svechinskaya punya sedikitnya lima rekening atas nama sendiri dan beberapa alias, di antaranya Anastasia Opokina dan Svetlana Makarova.

Kini, si cantik nan seksi itu diancam pidana 40 tahun dalam sel yang dingin atas dugaan kasus persekongkolan pembobolan bank dan menggunakan paspor palsu.

Jaksa Manhattan, Preet Bharara, mengungkapkan era digital membawa serta banyak manfaat, tetapi juga banyak tantangan untuk penegakan hukum dan lembaga keuangan.

"Penangkapan ini menunjukkan, pembobol bank modern tak lagi memerlukan senjata, masker, atau mobil untuk melarikan diri seperti perampokan konvensional."

"Ini hanya memerlukan internet dan kecerdikan, hanya dalam sekejap mata dengan cara meng-klik mouse," ucapnya.

Lenovo and NEC to form Japan's largest personal computer business

TOKYO - NEC and China's Lenovo said Thursday they will join forces to create the largest personal computer business in Japan and are exploring a possible tie-up in global PC sales.

Lenovo will own 51 per cent of the joint venture to be known as NEC Lenovo Group Japan. NEC Corp. will hold 49 per cent. As part of the deal, NEC will receive Lenovo shares worth $175 million.

The venture gives Lenovo a bigger presence in Japan while bringing NEC greater economies of scale and potential profitability for its struggling PC business.

NEC now has about a one-fifth share of Japan's PC market while Lenovo, the world's No. 4 PC maker, has about a 5 per cent share.

"It's crucial and very important for Lenovo's strategy to become the leading company in the PC industry," Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing told a joint news conference in Tokyo.

Lenovo has been expanding aggressively outside its home China market since acquiring IBM Corp.'s PC unit in 2005. Lenovo expanded into mobile Internet last year by launching its first smart phone and two Web-linked portable computers.

For NEC, whose PC business has been limited to the Japanese market, the venture could provide a bigger customer base to survive increased competition.

"Fast-growing Lenovo's partnership would boost our strength and would provide a new opportunity for our expansion in Japan and overseas," NEC President Nobuhiro Endo said.

The two companies, which will keep their separate brand names in Japan, have also agreed to explore further business co-operation in areas such as tablet devices and servers, while seeking a possible partnership in global PC sales, Endo said.

Hideyo Takasu, president of NEC Personal Products, will become president and CEO of the venture while Roderick Lappin, currently Lenovo Japan president, will serve as executive chairman.

"With the NEC partnership we will achieve a No. 1 market position in Japan and we are one step close to our ultimate goal" of leading the industry, said Lenovo's chief financial office Wong Wai Ming in a conference call with reporters.

Lenovo is the world's fourth-largest PC manufacturer behind Hewlett-Packard Co., Dell Inc. and Taiwan's Acer Inc. A combined Lenovo-NEC could rise to third place, though rankings are unclear until 2010 global sales figures are reported, Wong said.

The Dell Streak 7, Or: 10 Ways to Not Make an Android Tablet

If it was possible to drown in plastic and silicon, we would so choke to death on all the Android tablets coming soon. This is a guide to not making one. The Dell Streak 7 followed it precisely.

The Dell Streak 7 is perhaps the last Android tablet from a major manufacturer that will follow this guide. In a couple of months, after the tablet-centric Android 3.0 becomes de rigeur for any decent producer of Android-powered knick-nacks and bobbles, we'll enter a new phase of Android tablets where across-the-field genericness is offset by the taste and utility of Honeycomb. (In fact, I hope manufacturers don't take too deeply to differentiating by tweaking Honeycomb, since they've proven over and over again Google has better designers than they do.) But that doesn't mean we won't see plenty more tablets from othermanufacturers that follow the template set out by the Streak 7:

1. Use a middling, low-res screen with crummy viewing angles.

2. Use out-of-date software designed for a phone.

3. Halfway cover up said out-of-date software with a custom interface that is only mediocre—like covering a tiny face stretched across a giant head with a ski mask made out of wet flannel.

4. Make something with the heart of a cheetah—the Tegra 2—occasionally respond so slowly that a crippled turtle drowning in a meteor-sized ball of laffy taffy would move with greater speed.

5. Make sure that your pokes are ignored at least one quarter of the time you try to touch something on the screen.

6. Get rid of the search button without a good reason. (Was there not enough space? I do not think so.)

7. Require a two-year contract to buy it, tethering its money-draining corpse to you long after it's obsolete.

8. Turn the apps screen into a version of Minesweeper called, "App or Crapware?" (I am looking at you, BrainPOP.)

9. Design a paperback-sized device—that is still almost as much phone as tablet—around the idea that it'll primarily be held in a landscape position.

10. Pull all calling functions out of your giant phone-tablet.

If you absolutely must pick up a 7-inch Android tablet immediately, the Samsung Galaxy Tabis better at this very moment. The pickle is that the Streak has better guts and will one day be updated to Android 3.0, which will likely obliterate the software problems, while we've heard that the Galaxy Tab may not ever be updated to 3.0. (That said, Honeycomb won't do anything to fix the Streak 7's mediocre screen, which is totally inferior to the Tab, and we hate the idea of purchasing anything predicated on the hopes or promises of a software update, which is only slightly less risky than purchasing a lottery ticket.)

It's $200 with a two-year contract on T-Mobile, after a $50 rebate. Or you can buy it off-contract for $450. Given the flood of Android tablets that are in the pipe though, I'd very much just wait. Either for another Android tablet, or for this one to get 3.0.
